Why Church Camp Is Important!

I truly believe that every child should spend time at church camp during the summer - but them again - I'm a camp director. I am also a parent. As a parent I want my children to experience as many positive experiences as possible during their growing-up years. These experiences include, but are not limited to: Sunday School, 4-H, music drama, sports, travel, youth group activities, reading, school clubs, art, marching band and much more. What I appreciate most about church camp is it allows young people to encounter Christ, live in a community of like-minded peers, sing new songs, play games, tackle challenges, see new places, and experience adventures like rock climbing, backpacking and whitewater rafting. These activities teach life lessons and make for life-long memories and friendships in a Christ-centered, faith based community.

There are many opportunitiesfor our children and grandchildren to take part in during the summer – but none as holistic, and life-changing as church camp. As a result of a church camp experience we have witnessed many students return to camp in leadership roles, attend Brethren colleges, enter Brethren Volunteer Service, go into ministry as a vocation, and choose to work in service areas such as education & social work. This is exciting! This is why the Camp Blue Diamond staff is committed to outdoor ministry! Lives are changed, and leaders born. The teachings of Christ proclaimed. – Jerri Heiser Wenger

Summer 2017 Theme: Branching Out: Connecting through Christ

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

When campers come to camp, they will encounter growing things that may not be experienced elsewhere.  There are insects, lizards, toads and frogs to be discovered.  Trees and plants are bountiful and the all the sounds will remind each camper that they are a part of vast creation.  We come as individuals, but through our time together we will discover our connectedness to God, God’s people, and God’s creation.

Our theme this summer is “Branching Out: Connecting through Christ.” Camp is a good time to branch out —to sleep in a cabin, make new friends; learn about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and to connect with others.  Campers will try new activities such as swimming, canoeing, and climbing the tower; and they will also discover new things about themselves and their connection as members of the Body of Christ.

In John 15 Jesus tells us that he is the vine and we are the branches. We have two jobs as branches: to stay connected to the vine and to bear fruit. Jesus’ life will flow through us if we remain in him. This summer campers will explore ways to deepen their faith in Christ and discover the urgency of remaining connected to the vine, that is, Jesus Christ, and to live together as members of the Body of Christ.
